Hungary joined the Organization on September 14, 1948.

In November 2007, Hungary hosted in Budapest the third World Science Forum in the framework of the celebration of the International World Science Day (10 November), co-organized by the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, in partnership with UNESCO, ICSU and the European Commission. The Forum was focused on “Investing in Knowledge: Investing in the Future”.

Hungary’s Renaissance-era Bibliotheca Corviniana - the largest collection of books in Europe after the Vatican’s - is included in UNESCO’s Memory of the World Register.

Hungary is host to the CONFINTEA VI Preparatory Regional Conference in Europe in December 2008.

There are eight UNESCO Chairs in Hungary.
