Iceland joined the Organization on June 8, 1964.

Developing access to online information and cultural diversity in cyberspace is the core of cooperation between the Republic of Iceland and UNESCO.

The appointment of former President Vigdís Finnbogadottir as UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador for Multilingual Education demonstrates the country’s commitment to the promotion of linguistic diversity in information and communication.

The island is also active in the Management of Social Transformations Programme (MOST). From 1995 to 2005, it participated in the “Circumpolar Coping Processes Project” for marginalized communities in Nordic countries.
