Latvia joined UNESCO on October 14, 1991.

The historic centre of the Latvian capital, Riga, was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1997.

In July 2005 in Riga, Latvia hosted the International Forum entitled “Transmitting Intangible Cultural Heritage: Youth, Education and Development”.

The North Vidzeme region is a biosphere reserve that is part of UNESCO's Man and the Biosphere (MAB) programme.

Latvia attaches great importance to conserving its intangible heritage; its folk tradition is represented in the Baltic Song and Dance Celebrations, proclaimed in 2003 as elements of Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.
