LegislationThe Statutes of the Commission (in Norwegian), adopted in 1946, were revised in 1996 and in 2008.
Documentation CentreThough the National Commission has not settled any Documentation Centre, all UNESCO publications are kept in the offices of the Norwegian UN Association.
Structure of the CommissionThe National Commission consists of the following bodies:
- The General Assembly;
- The Executive Committee;
- Three Working Groups, respectively in charge of: (1) Education; (2) Sciences; (3) Culture and Communication.
- The Secretariat.
Members/CompositionThe National Commission is composed of 16 members with special skills in at least one of UNESCO`s four disciplines. They represent relevant Ministries, departments, national institutions, agencies as well as Teachers' Associations and Non-Governmental Organizations. The members of the Commission are appointed by the Ministry of Education and Research for a period of four years.
Executive CommitteeComposed of 4 members, including of the leaders of the three Working Groups and the Chairperson.
General AssemblyComposed of 16 members, representing relevant national institutions, agencies, associations and non-governmental organisations in the fields of UNESCO’s competence. The members of the Commission are appointed by the Ministry of Education and Research for a period of four years. The General Assembly meets three to four times a year.

OverviewThe Norwegian National Commission has a long-standing tradition of cooperation with the National Commissions of the Nordic countries.
