Ukraine joined UNESCO on May 12, 1954.

Ukraine achieved the goal of gender parity both in primary and secondary education in 2002, according to the EFA Global Monitoring Report 2006.

The country has three cultural World Heritage sites, and its first natural site (transboundary with Slovakia), the Primeval Beech Forests of the Carpathian, was added to the list in 2007.

The Collection of Jewish Musical Folklore (1912-1947) at the Vernadsky Library (Ukraine’s National Library), comprising the largest collection of Jewish folk music recorded on Edison wax cylinders, was inscribed on UNESCO's Memory of the World Register in 2005.

The ARTEK International Children’s Centre (Crimea), an educational and recreational facility for young people, was placed under the auspices of UNESCO in 2006.

UNESCO’s Man and the Biosphere programme (MAB) network includes six biosphere reserves in Ukraine, of which two are transboundary.
