  • Primary education in El Salvador

    El Salvador joined UNESCO on April 28, 1948. The country is covered by the UNESCO Office in San Jose, Costa Rica.

    With an adult literacy rate of 79.9 percent, El Salvador is in an intermediate position in terms of meeting the objectives set down by UNESCO’s Education For All and as regards its application of EDUCO (the Community-Managed Schools Programme), which is aimed at providing education services oriented towards community participation in the country’s poorest rural areas.

    As of September 2006, El Salvador has 23 schools participating in the UNESCO’s Associated Schools Project Network (ASPnet).
