Marc Ladreit de Lacharrière is appointed UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador

The Director General of UNESCO, Koïchiro Matsuura, will appoint the French entrepreneur Marc Ladreit de Lacharrière, as UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador during a ceremony at UNESCO Headquarters on 27 of August (7 p.m., 7th floor).

The appointment comes “in recognition of his crucial role in the promotion of education and culture for social cohesion, his commitment against discrimination and in favour of equal opportunity, and his devoted service to the Organisation.”

Born in Nice, in France, in 1940, Marc Ladreit de Lacharrière is founder and CEO of Financière Marc de Lacharrière (FIMALAC) and Member of the Institute (Academy of Fine Arts), to which he was elected in 2006. He is President of the French magazine, Revue des Deux Mondes. He also heads the Culture and Diversity Foundation, established to use culture, the arts and artistic practices in the service of social cohesion and equality of opportunity for young people from disadvantaged backgrounds. He is also a leading patron of the Louvre Museum.

As UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador he will participate in the Education for All (EFA) programme, with a focus on fighting discrimination and promoting equal opportunity.

UNESCO Goodwill Ambassadors are public figures who use their talent and reputation to promote the ideals of the Organisation and help engage the public in its activities. Marc Ladreit de Lacharrière will join a group that includes such figures as Her Royal Highness Princess Firyal, Cheick Modibo Diarra, Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn and Pierre Bergé.
