The Director-General of UNESCO on official visit to Jamaica, the Republic of Guyana and Suriname (1 to 8 May 2003)

02-05-2003 - The Director-General of UNESCO, Koïchiro Matsuura, will undertake a series of official visits to Jamaica (& to 4 May), to the Republic of Guyana (4-5 May), and to Suriname (5 to 8 May).

While in Jamaica, the Director-General will attend, in the company of the Prime Minister of Jamaica, Mr Percival J. Patterson, the opening session of the International Conference on Freedom of Expression entitled “Freedom of Expression: Early New Millennium Challenges” which will be held from 2-3 May in Kingston. As a side event of the conference, on the occasion of World Press Freedom Day, Koïchiro Matsuura will award the Israeli journalist, Amira Hass, the UNESCO/ Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize. During his stay in Jamaica, the Director-General of UNESCO will hold talks with the Jamaican authorities and discuss, with ministers in charge of UNESCO-related activities, the state of cooperation between the government and UNESCO.



The Director-General will then visit the city of Accompong where he will meet with the “Maroon” indigenous community, accompanied by the Minister of Industry and Tourism, he will visit the “UNESCO Youth Path” project and Port Royal, a candidate for inscription on the World Heritage List.



While in Guyana, the Director-General will hold talks with the Head of State, President Bharrat Jagdeo, with the Prime Minister as well as with the ministers of Foreign Affairs, Education, Culture, Youth and Sports, with whom he will exchange views on subjects of common interest. The Director-General will also meet the Secretary-General of CARICOM.



From 5 to 8 May, Koïchiro Matsuura will travel to Suriname where he will meet the President Runaldo Venetiaan, as well as the ministers of Foreign Affairs and Education. The Director-General is to also meet the President of the National Assembly. During his visit he will receive a Doctorat Honoris Causa in the field of social science education from the Anton de Kom University of Suriname.



In addition, Koïchiro Matsuura will visit the historic city centre of Paramaribo, recently inscribed on the World Heritage List, and participate in the unveiling of a commemorative plaque and certificate ceremony. Prior to this event, he will have visited, in the company of the Minister of Natural Resources, the Suriname Nature Reserve, newly added to the World Heritage List.
