Benin joined UNESCO on October 18, 1960. It comes under the jurisdiction of the UNESCO Office in Accra.

Benin holds three UNESCO Chairs and it has a UNESCO-UNEVOC centre for technical education and professional training. To help with distance learning, multimedia community centres have also been put in place.

Benin is one of the 35 countries implementing the UNESCO Literacy Initiative for Empowerment (LIFE), a 10-year initiative aimed at achieving the goals of the United Nations Literacy Decade (2003-2012).
