Benin

Benin joined UNESCO on 18 October 1960 and is covered by the UNESCO Office in Accra (Ghana).

UNESCO is supporting the country in its drive to improve its educational system. Benin has abolished school fees and is carrying out the recommendations of its 2007 Educational Forum.

President Thomas Yayi Boni’s visit to UNESCO (June 2006) and Director-General Koïchiro Matsuura’s to Benin (February 2007) explored new cooperation possibilities. Benin’s interests range from language preservation to sustainable management of coastal resources to building a national museum.

Benin’s Royal Palaces of Abomey were added to the World Heritage List in 1985.
