Burundi joined UNESCO on November 16, 1962, and is served by the UNESCO office in Bjumburra.

The country has a UNESCO Chair for Education for Peace and Conflict Resolution and two UNEVOC (for technical and vocational training) centres.

UNESCO is leading education, literacy, teacher training and human rights activities in Burundi. President Pierre Nkurunziza’s visit to UNESCO in November 2006 further boosted cooperation. The Organization hailed Burundi’s decision to provide free primary education.

The project "Writing Burundi History" was launched in 1997 with UNESCO’s support. An effort to establish historical fact, it promotes peace and reconstruction.

Burundi participates in the Great Apes Survival Project (GRASP), a concerted approach to face a major extinction crisis.
