Comoros

The Union of Comoros joined UNESCO on 22 March 1977. It is covered by the UNESCO Office in Dar es Salaam (Tanzania).

The country works closely with UNESCO to improve its education system.

The Union of Comoros values cultural policies that enhance synergy between culture and development. In 2007, four sites were placed on the World Heritage Tentative List. These include marine ecosystems and the cultural landscape of the perfume plantations on the Islands of the Moon.

Another area of cooperation is collective historical memory. Comoros is involved in the Slave Route project. It is taking inventory of sites and participating in a study launched in 2006 on related regional oral tradition.

Among other communication projects, Comoros benefits from the 2006 UNESCO-BBC partnership to provide high-quality television programmes on science and technology to developing nations.
