Ghana joined UNESCO on 11 April 1958. The Organization has an office based in Accra, covering several countries.

Koïchiro Matsuura, Director-General of UNESCO, paid an official visit to Ghana in February 2007. He took part in the 200th Anniversary commemoration of the Abolition of the North Atlantic Slave Trade.

Ghana is participating in the UNESCO Teacher Training Initiative for Sub-Saharan Africa (TTISSA), launched in 2006, as well as EDUCAIDS, for HIV/AIDS prevention education.

The Bia Biosphere Reserve was included in the project “Biosphere Reserves for Biodiversity Conservation and Sustainable Development in Anglophone Africa (BRAAF)”.

Two cultural sites in the country are included on the World Heritage List.
