Liberia joined UNESCO on 6 March 1947. The country is covered by the UNESCO Office in Accra (Ghana).

Liberian president Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Africa’s first woman head of state, visited UNESCO on 8 March, Women’s Day, 2006. She and Director-General Koïchura Matsuura opened a round table on “Women politicians”. They also discussed ongoing cooperation, particularly in education, culture and the fight against HIV/Aids.

UNESCO is also providing special support to Liberia’s media. The Liberia Media Center (LMC) organized an internship programme for journalists in June 2007, with emphasis on professional ethics.
