Sao Tome and Principe

The island of Sao Tome and Principe joined UNESCO on 22 January 1980. It is served by the Organization's office in Libreville, Gabon.

Education and literacy are the government’s most pressing concerns in Sao Tome and Principe. UNESCO has set up a project to improve the quality of teaching in primary and secondary schools.

Cultural heritage preservation is another key area of cooperation with UNESCO. In 2007, the country organized a professional workshop in cultural heritage management. This represented the first initiative of its kind in the archipelago.

Since 2004, the country has benefited from the creation of a virtual library of Portuguese-language books. Led by UNESCO and Brazil, this project has given access to almost 20,000 books and periodicals.
