The country is covered by the UNESCO Cluster Office based in Accra, Ghana.

A UNESCO Chair on renewable energies was established in 1999 at the University of Lomé to support research and contribute to the doctoral training of future decision makers concerning natural resources development and environment preservation in the area.

 

Another chair was established at the University of Lomé in 2007. This chair in geosciences and sustainable development will promote an integrated system of research, training and development in the fields of earth and environmental sciences, and contribute to the development of agriculture. 80% of the population is dependent on agriculture for livelihood.
