LegislationThe Constitution of the National Commission (an Ordinance) dates back to 1967 and was revised in 1984. It is only available in Arabic.
Documentation CentreThe Documentation Centre essentially gathers publications issued by UNESCO, the Arab League, ALESCO, ISESCO, and the ABEGS (the Arab Bureau of Education for the Gulf States) and other IGOs and NGOs. It is not computerized at present, but it is administered by a trained documentalist.
The majority of its visitors is composed of higher education students, academics and researchers.
Structure of the CommissionThe National Commission is composed of the following bodies:
- The General Assembly, which meets once or twice a year;
- The Secretariat.
The Commission does not have any Programme Committees.
Members/CompositionThe membership of the National Commission mainly includes representants of Ministries, governmental organizations and higher education.
Executive CommitteeThe Executive Committee meets four times a year. Its membership is restricted to members of the National Commissions or their deputies.
General AssemblyThe General Assembly meets twice a year. It's membership is restricted to the members of the National Commission or their deputies.
Committees or Sub-CommitteesThe Commission has no programme committees.
Interaction with UNESCO and National Commissions
OverviewThe National Commission mainly co-operates with the Arab and the English-speaking National Commissions. It also maintains good and healthy working relations with the UNESCO Field Offices of Doha, Beirut and Cairo, which either provide the Commission with technical assistance or collaborate with it in the implementation of Programme activities. The same applies to ALECSO, ISESCO and ABEGS.
