Three Iraqi sites are inscribed on the World Heritage List, two of which also appear on the List of World Heritage in Danger: Ashur (Qal'at Sherqat) and Samarra Archaeological City.

In the field of intangible heritage, the Iraqi Maqam was proclaimed a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity in 2003.
Iraqi─UNESCO cooperation focuses on encouraging the process of reconstruction and preparing national reconciliation based on the respect for the different cultures and beliefs of the Iraqi people. An international coordination committee for safeguarding Iraq's cultural heritage was established in 2003 to distribute international assistance more efficiently. To fight against looting and vandalism, a database of Iraqi cultural properties has been established.
