Kiribati

    Kiribati joined UNESCO on 24 October 1989. The country is covered by the UNESCO Office in Apia, Samoa.

    The Republic of Kiribati, formerly known as the Gilbert Islands, is a Pacific island State located south of Hawaii and north of Tuvalu. It consists of three main archipelagos, made up of 32 atolls, and a single island. Like the inhabitants of the neighbouring Marshall and Caroline Islands, the people of Kiribati (the Gilbert Islanders) are known for their expert use of the extremely rapid outrigger canoe.

    At a UNESCO-funded workshop held in May 2007 in Tarawa, Kiribati, representatives of government, civil service and media agreed to improve the sharing of public information.
