Sri Lanka has six cultural and one natural site on the World Heritage List. The tsunami which devastated several Indian Ocean territories in December 2004 caused untold destruction to the site of the old city of Galle and its fortifications. UNESCO is in charge of the restoration work on the site.

The Organization has lent its support to the Sri Lanka National Trust for the natural and cultural heritage which will launch educational and restoration programmes to protect and promote the country’s natural and cultural heritage - both tangible and intangible - and encourages intercultural dialogue.

UNESCO was a prime mover in the vast international campaign of the 1980s and 1990s to safeguard ancient monuments and cities in the centre of the country, which resulted in very satisfactory restoration work and increased public awareness.

Sri Lanka, along with other South Asian countries, is seeking to elaborate policies for the protection of the environment and the promotion of heritage with a focus on cultural and ecotourism.

Concerning creative industries, Sri Lanka supports the development of its crafts through the Seal of Excellence programme.
