Tonga

Tonga joined UNESCO on September 29, 1980, and is covered by the UNESCO Office Apia (Samoa).

Particularly active in education, Tonga participates in the Education for All (EFA) Programme by organizing forums, naming national coordinators and preparing action plans. As of September 2006, the country has 22 schools participating in the UNESCO’s Associated Schools Project Network (ASPnet).

Tonga is participating in several regional UNESCO scientific projects, including the regional ocean monitoring network and the Pacific Tsunami Warning and Mitigation System.

In 2006, the Tonga Broadcasting Corporation (TBC) made and aired a series of radio and TV programmes on poverty and possible solutions in Tonga. Funding was provided by UNESCO's International Programme for the Development of Communications (IPDC).

Proclaimed a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity in 2003, Lakalaka is a combination of choreography, music and sung speeches relating to local legends and history. It plays a major role during important ceremonies such as the coronation of the monarch.
