Uzbekistan joined UNESCO on 26 October 1993. The country is served by the UNESCO Office in Tashkent.

Uzbekistan has already achieved the Education for All goals of adult literacy and gender parity, according to the EFA Global Monitoring Report (2002).

The country has four cultural World Heritage sites: the Historic Centre of Bukhara (1993); the Historic Centre of Shakhrisyabz (2000); Itchan Kala (1990); and
Samarkand – Crossroads of Cultures (2001).

The Cultural Space of the Boysun District and the Shashmaqom tradition have been proclaimed UNESCO Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity (2001 and 2003).

The country is working with UNESCO on management of water resources and ecosystems, an issue of particular significance for its population, living alongside the Aral Sea basin and Amu Darya river where the ecological system is at risk.

Uzbekistan participates in UNESCO’s Seal of Excellence for Handicrafts programme, aimed at quality control and marketing of traditional crafts.

The International Institute of Central Asian Studies in Samarkand (IICAS) was established under the aegis of UNESCO in 1995.
