Safeguarding of the Minaret of Jam in Afghanistan: Photo Exhibit

The exhibit focuses on conservation work undertaken in the last 47 years to protect this World Heritage site, which is also inscribed on the List of World Heritage, in Danger.
The gracious Minaret of Jam (Afghanistan) dates back to the twelfth century. Replete with intricate brick decoration and a blue tile inscription near its summit, the 65 metre-high tower bears witness to the exceptional quality of the region's rich artistic tradition. The monument's impact is further enhanced by its spectacular natural setting: a deep valley nestled between soaring mountains in the heart of Ghor Province.

A series of recent and archive photos from the collection of Italian architect, Andrea Bruno, who worked on the site for decades, are on view. The exhibit is organized with financial assistance from the Direzione Generale per la Cooperazione Italiana allo Sviluppo of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Fondazione per l'Arte della Compagnia di San Paolo and will travel to the Museo di Antichità in Turin (Italy) this summer to be displayed in conjunction with the exhibition, "Afghanistan, I Tesori Ritrovati" (The Retreived Treasures of Afghanistan).

  • Venue: UNESCO Headquarters, Ramp, in front of Room X, 9h30 a.m.-5h30 p.m. (open to the public)
