The Homeowner’s Manual: Revitalizing the Kotagede Heritage District

The Homeowner’s Manual is launched to provide conservation guidelines for the revitalization of traditional houses damaged by the earthquake that struck the town of Kotagede, near Yogyakarta on the Indonesian island of Java, on 27 May 2007.

The manual has been compiled with the participation of local communities to raise awareness of the importance of taking into account heritage conservation principles in the rehabilitation work. It covers three sub-districts: Purbayan, Prenggan and Jagalan in the Kotagede Heritage District. This area, which was declared by the Mayor of Yogyakarta as a ‘living museum’ in 2003, is now seriously endangered since many traditional houses were destroyed by the earthquake. Many owners are unable to restore them in the traditional style, and most of the craftsmen have lost the necessary resources to continue their work.

The Houseowner’s Manual will be launched in the presence of national and local authorities as well as the local communities who were involved in the project. The publication is part of a series developed by the UNESCO Bangkok Office in Asia and the Pacific, including Katmandhu (Nepal), Hue (Vietnam) and Vigan (Philippines).
