From 28 to 30 September 2017, Kaunas, a UNESCO Creative City of Design, will play host to 4D, an international conference aimed at highlighting the value of design for social entities, technological advancement, and business creation and renewal.
Designing Development and Developing Design are the conference’s thematic axes.
On 11-12 February, “Writing Our Melbourne” will showcase the work of three expatriate Indian authors and their conceptions of their city, as part of the Jaipur Literature Festival Melbourne. The festival, in itself a collaboration between the Jaipur Literature Festival and the Melbourne Writers Festivals, will explore the unique links between the two Creative Cities, their countries and people.
Throughout the year 2016, Ulyanovsk and its region has held no less than 2000 events dedicated to the celebration of the 250th anniversary of the Russian historiographer, writer and thinker Nikolaï Mikhaïlovitch Karamzin. To name but a few major events: the Karamzin marathon “History in Faces”, a Literary festival “The Word” and the “Karamzin Assembly”.
From 21 January to 11 February, the third Triennale of Kogei (Crafts) will be held in Kanazawa, Japan, a Creative City of Crafts and Folk Art.
The event will offer two parallel exhibitions:
Open to all members of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network, the theme of the 2017 edition of Bradford’s Small World Film Festival is “My City”.
In this framework, the Creative City of Film calls for the UCCN members to submit a short film about their city, meeting the following instructions:
The short films should not exceed a maximum of 6-minute length;
The Creative Cities, that have joined the Network from 2007 and 2009, have submitted their Membership Monitoring Reports. Discover the main achievements of the cities of Glasgow, Iowa City, Kobe, Lyon, Melbourne, Nagoya, Shenzhen, Bradford, Ghent and Kanazawa, in implementing the Network’s Mission Statement at both the local and international level.
Since its designation in 2013, Paducah, a UNESCO Creative City of Crafts and Folk Art, led by the Paducah Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB), actively contributes to the promotion of the Network’s objectives and values. Acting as the CVB Executive Director, Mary Hammond has been appointed to serve as representative of state and local interests to the U.S. National Commission for UNESCO through December 2018.
From 18 November to 25 December, citizens and onlookers are invited to (re)discover the “Sapporo White Illumination”, which sheds light on the site of Odori of the Creative City of Media Arts. The “White Illumination” project started in 1981 and was the first illumination event in Japan. Its concept of expressing the beauty of snowy landscapes with light had a big impact on other Japanese cities, and ever since, illumination events spread all over Japan.
Tongyeong International Music Foundation (TIMF), in cooperation with other artistic institutions and partners, calls for musicians of the UNESCO Creative Cities to apply to the TIMF Academy 2017.
Deputy Mayor for Culture Annelies Storms had a very specific profile in mind. The new city composer had to be young, not yet well known, but already experienced; he/she had to be able to reach out to a broad audience through cross-overs with other disciplines; he/she has to be an ambassador for Ghent both on a national and an international level. After a thorough deliberation a commission of experts unanimously advised to appoint Fulco Ottervanger as the Ghent city composer for 2017-2019.
