Turkmenistan is represented on the World Heritage List by three cultural sites.
The ancient city of Merv with its earthen buildings is the subject of cooperative programmes ensuring the follow-up, management and conservation of its cultural properties and training of local personnel in collaboration with neighbouring countries, UNESCO and the non-governmental organization, CRATerre of the Architecture School of Grenoble (France). In collaboration with the other Central Asian States and China, and under the auspices of UNESCO, the country is preparing the Serial World Heritage Nomination of the Silk Road.
Turkmenistan belongs to the network of intangible heritage institutions in the region.
The country contributed actively to the production of the History of Civilizations of Central Asia.
As part of UNESCO’s project on the analytical and systematic inventory of caravanserais of Central Asia, a study of the caravanserais of Eurasia and of caravan routes is being carried out at present.
Turkmenistan and UNESCO also collaborate in the framework of the programme for Intercultural Dialogue in Central Asia.
