Intangible Heritage in Ethiopia, Djibouti and Somalia

Since ratifying the 2003 Intangible Heritage Convention in February 2006, the Government of Ethiopia has begun inventorying its intangible cultural heritage.

In Djibouti, the ratification of the 2003 Convention is currently under discussion at the national level, and the current situation regarding Somalia's intangible cultural heritage and its needs will also be reported upon on the basis of an assessment carried out in early 2006.

The objectives of the meeting are to:

  • increase the participants' knowledge of the 2003 Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage;
  • take stock of the situation as regards the identification and the safeguarding of intangible cultural heritage (ICH) in Djibouti, Ethiopia and Somalia;
  • learn from the experience of other countries in ICH inventory-making;
  • discuss the national strategy and methodology concerning ICH inventory-making in Ethiopia.

Experts from the Regional Cultural Bureaux of Ethiopia, representatives of the communities, NGOs, researchers, an expert both from Djibouti and Somalia, representatives from IPHAN, Brazil (Instituto do patrimonio historico e artistico nacional/National Institute for Historic and Artistic Heritage) and the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage Section (CH/ITH) in Paris will participate in the meeting.
