    A Cultural Approach to HIV/AIDS Prevention and Care

    Within the framework of the UNESCO/AIDS joint project “A Cultural Approach to HIV/AIDS Prevention and Care”, UNESCO Maputo held a workshop in collaboration with UNFPA, the Mozambican authorities and FCD (an NGO working in the area of HIV/AIDS), on the Socio-Cultural Approach to HIV/AIDS Prevention and Care.

    The Culture Specialist, Moji Okuribido-Seriki attended the workshop with the aim to discover more about the Cultural Approach to HIV/AIDS, and to learn, first-hand, of experiences and good practices with a view to applying the knowledge when formulating future projects using this approach.

    The aim of the workshop was to put into practice lessons learned from the UNESCO/UNFPA/FCD field studies carried out in the centre and south of the country, as well as lessons learned by partners in implementing socio-culturally appropriate HIV/AIDS prevention and care programmes. The project was implemented within the framework of the UNESCO Programme on Preventive Education and to complement the activities being undertaken within the context of the Training Programme for Preventive Education against HIV/AIDS and the development of a training manual for Teacher Educators in Sub-Saharan Africa.

    Research activities to be carried out in 2005, have now been initiated in Lesotho, in collaboration with the Lesotho College of Education. The project, co-financed by culture and education consists of designing and carrying out a research programme on the socio-cultural issues linked with the HIV/AIDS problematic. The research findings will then serve to contextualize and finalize an HIV/AIDS training manual for lecturers at Tertiary Institutions; to develop a HIV/AIDS booklet for student teachers adapted to the socio-cultural context in Lesotho. The manual and booklet will be tested and evaluated during the HIV/AIDS semester course for student teachers.
