Fostering the Niger Film Industry

 Project completed

Project description

Once one of the leading countries in African documentary filmmaking, Niger is now suffering from a dramatic decrease in film production and poor distribution due to a complete lack of cinema screens. To help revive interest in the national industry, the Niger Alliance for Cultural Diversity has set up the first ever African Documentary Film Forum in the capital Niamey.

As part of the ten-day event, the Global Alliance sponsored a documentary filmmaking workshop for a group of ten local youngsters with no prior experience in film. The session covered all aspects of film production, from the initial idea for a story through camera technique and directing to editing and distribution. After three days of theory, the young students were able to put their lessons into practice and produce a short documentary on the Forum that was going on simultaneously.

Now to be held every two years, the Forum aims to help raise public interest in film, inspire a new generation of filmmakers and promote the development of the industry's infrastructure.
