Networking of Interreligious Women’s Associations from East Africa

Some 100 participants take part in this international conference to exchange best practices and experiences in the field of interreligious dialogue based on the outcome of a series of training-of-trainers workshops carried out in East Africa since September 2006. Topics discussed: the main obstacles and positive responses encountered.

In partnership with the World Conference of Religions for Peace, a pilot scheme has been undertaken to reinforce Interreligious Women’s Associations, through training-of-trainers workshops, in Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, Southern Sudan, Tanzania and Uganda.

These workshops enabled an initial group of women from different religions, cultures and ethnic backgrounds to be trained as mediators in conflicts and in the education of children traumatized by war or affected by pandemics. They were also intended to empower women and to strengthen their role in key areas, such as sustainable development, resource management (e.g., water), with the view to reducing intercommunity conflicts.

The conclusions of the meeting will be summarized in a practical handout manual.
