One of the principal axes of Senegal’s cooperation with UNESCO has led to the inscription of five sites on the World Heritage List, including the Island of Gorée, a principal site linked to the slave trade and the establishment of a ,major inventory, which will be helpful in drawing up the country's Tentative List.
The intangible heritage is yet another operational orientation. A safeguarding project was launched to protect the Kankurang, Manding Initiatory Rite. This ritual, which is also practised in Gambia, was proclaimed a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity in 2005.
In the context of cultural policies and intercultural dialogue, Senegal has set out three priorities : interreligious dialogue, the cultural approach to HIV and AIDS prevention and treatment, and the Slave Route as part of the UNESCO/WTO project of cultural tourism on sites of memory, which calls for inventorying, archiving and promoting the oral tradition linked to the slave trade. Cultural tourism is also being proposed as a developmental mainspring in the region of West Africa: in the case of Senegal, this involves a programme in the Saint-Louis region.
The country carried out a large number of activities during the 2004 International Year for the Commemoration of the Struggle Against Slavery and its Abolition.
Cultural industries are being stimulated through promotion of publishing as part of the Global Alliance for Cultural Diversity.
