Since our last edition, UNESCO's General Conference has approved the Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions in October 2005. This landmark agreement is another affirmation of the importance of cultural diversity in our increasingly globalized world. One consequence of the Convention is the new impetus it gives to UNESCO's Institute of Statistics to develop an updated framework for cultural statistics, an important pre-requisite for tracking cultural diversity." Welcome to the third edition of the Global Alliance Newsletter. It is a busy time for the Alliance with our first international conference 'Partnerships on the Move' taking place in Paris, 12 September. That is to be followed by the workshop 'Building and Promoting Creative Cities' on 13 September. There have been exciting developments with the Creative Cities Network in recent months. New cities have been appointed and applications keep arriving from cities all over the world to join the network." "

The first few months of the year have been very busy for the Global Alliance team, with trips to India, Colombia, Canada and elsewhere. We have started planning our first Global Alliance Conference 'Partnerships on the Move' which will take place on 12 September in Paris. We are also happy to announce that the Spanish government has decided to support our financing, giving us additional resources to continue building our efforts to support cultural industries around the world."
