Since our last edition, UNESCO's General Conference has approved the Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions in October 2005. This landmark agreement is another affirmation of the importance of cultural diversity in our increasingly globalized world. One consequence of the Convention is the new impetus it gives to UNESCO's Institute of Statistics to develop an updated framework for cultural statistics, an important pre-requisite for tracking cultural diversity."
