Mali has three cultural sites and one natural site on the World Heritage List. Timbuktu was removed from the List of World Heritage in Danger thanks to a series of measures undertaken to improve the preservation of the monuments of the historic city.

Mali and UNESCO have also cooperated very actively in the field of intangible heritage. An inventory of intangible expressions is being drawn up, and an action plan has been implemented to safeguard the Cultural Space of the Yaaral and Degal, which was proclaimed a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2005.

In the framework of the Global Alliance for Cultural Diversity, which supports cultural industries, a project has been elaborated for the purpose of perpetuating and improving the Festival au Désert Training sessions in copyright and the fight against piracy have also been organized.

Mali also participated in the implementation of the Slave Route Project, in particular through its contribution to the development of tourism of memory.
