Mozambique has one cultural site – the Island of Mozambique – on the World Heritage List and participates in meetings of the World Heritage Centre on issues regarding Africa. Its cooperation with UNESCO in the field of heritage aims at facilitating, through the restoration and protection of the Island of Mozambique’s heritage, the development of income-generating activities and fighting poverty. The rehabilitation of Fort San Sebastian is underway.

Mozambique regards its intangible heritage as a matter of active concern and wishes to undertake inventories and train specialized staff.
The Chopi Timbila, a traditional musical expression, was declared a masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity in 2005, as was the traditional dance and music, Gule Wamkulu, presented together with Malawi and Zambia. An action plan has been implemented to ensure it’s the safeguarding of these expressions.
In the area of art and cultural enterprise, the country cooperates with UNESCO’s Global Alliance for cultural diversity to develop the economic and social potential of its creative industries.

Its cooperation with UNESCO in the framework of cultural policies has resulted in the establishment of the Observatory for Cultural Policies in Africa (OCPA) located in Maputo.

As part of the UNESCO-WTO cultural tourism project for the Slave Route, Mozambique drew up an inventory of its sites and carried out a national awareness-raising campaign on modern forms of slavery.

The action regarding the cultural approach to HIV and AIDS prevention and care has led to the creation of publications and training programmes.
