Sierra Leone ratified the World Heritage Convention in 2005 and is determined to build on the safeguarding and management of its cultural heritage for its reconstruction by way of the project entitled “Heritage, dialogue and reconciliation: the heritage in pre- and post-conflict situations”.

The country is equally dedicated to protecting its intangible and underwater heritage.

In restoring the sites, the UNESCO/WTO cultural tourism project point up the major role played by the country in the trade in slaves from all over Africa and in the return of the American slaves.
