In collaboration with the Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO), the Arab Bureau of Education for the Gulf States (ABEGS) and the Arab League Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization (ALECSO), UNESCO organized the Third Session of the Forum of Arab Parliamentarians for Education (FARPED III) on 12 and 13 April 2009 in Cairo (Egypt). 50 participants took part in this Forum aiming to reinforce parliamentarian action towards education.
FARPED members met during 2 days with the aim to reinforce their action on education in the Arab region, and more specifically to increase the national budget, to take account of the Education for All objectives in national legislations, as well as favoring a strong parliamentary commitment along with the promotion of a closer dialogue with citizens. These parliamentary debates contributed to the enrichment of the Organization’s beliefs towards the process of national policy making.
The reinforcement of FARPED operational capacities, along with the presentation of different national parliamentary experiences in the field of education was also on the agenda.
At the closing of this inter-parliamentary conference, participants adopted an action plan and a Declaration by which they were engaged to legislate in favour of the EFA goals in the Arab region. Election of new members of the FARPED Bureau was also part of the agenda.
