#WorldHeritage: The Alhambra is, as medieval poets called it, "a pearl set in emeralds," an allusion to the colour of its buildings and the woods around them. The sheer red walls of the Alhambra fortress and residence rise from the medieval Granada woods. It was the former rural residence of the emirs who ruled this part of Spain in the 13th and 14th centuries. Inside is one of the more splendid sights of Europe: a network of magnificently decorated royal Arab palaces and green grass gardens of the medieval period.
