1st Forum of the UN Alliance of Civilizations – Youth ProgrammeThe Alliance of Civilizations is an initiative that was launched by the Secretary General of the United Nations in 2005 and sponsored by the Governments of Spain and Turkey. Following a recommendation of a report from the High Level Group of the AoC, to make youth a priority field of action, the Secretariat of the AoC, the Turkish and Spanish governments and the Friends of the AoC – including UNESCO – voiced their wish to associate young people to the Alliance of Civilizations.

To that avail, UNESCO recommended to the Secretariat of the AoC, the names of around 50 young participants, leaders or active members of youth organizations, involved in the Youth Forums organized by UNESCO during 2006 and 2007. Twelve of them were selected and invited to participate in the 1st Forum of the Alliance of Civilizations

In total, over fifty youths participated in the youth part of the 1st Forum of the Alliance of Civilizations, representing around 40 countries. Two working group sessions for the young people were set up.

The first of these sessions was devoted to the presentation by the AoC of the different partners of the youth part, then to discussions and exchanges on Media issues: which are the main media platforms that young people have or do not have access to? How can young people mobilize themselves, through the media, to promote positive long-term relations with cultures and religions?

The second session revolved around the theme ‘Dialogue among civilizations and religions: looking towards youth. What are the best practices that have allowed communities and groups, previously unconnected, to benefit from durable relations? What are the key components of success of a youth exchange program, in terms of methodology, evaluation and follow-up?

The Forum also saw the launch of the Youth Solidarity Funds of the AoC which aims to support projects led by youth people in the AoC’s fields of expertise. Three main themes have been identified by the Funds for 2008:
  • an intercultural and inter-religious exchange with a strong learning dimension;
  • valuing young people’s voices within the media;
  • training the next generation of peace builders.
