2008 UNESCO Regional Meeting "Youth Networks and Policies"
As part of the follow up to the 1st Americas Youth Forum, the UNESCO Regional Meeting - Youth Networks and Policies will take place during the International Conference of the Americas (CILA 2008), in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, from 15 to 19 October 2008.

2008 UNESCO Regional Meeting The meeting is organized by UNESCO, the United Nations Association of the Dominican Republic (UNA-DR) and the Fundación Global Democracia y Desarrollo (FUNGLODE), in collaboration with the Ministry of Youth and the Permanent Delegation of the Dominican Republic to UNESCO, the Dominican National Commission for UNESCO and UNESCO's Montevideo Field Office.

The meeting is conducted as a follow-up to the 1st Americas Youth Forum (2007, Acapulco, Mexico) that gathered young people from 34 countries of the American Continent. Among its principal recommendations was the creation of the Americas Youth Network.

This Network was conceived as a mechanism:
  • to follow-up on the recommendations of the UNESCO-Youth Forums;
  • to involve young people from the region in a common project together with the organizations and systems working on the issue in the region;
  • and to articulate the regional efforts in the field of youth, principally strengthening the knowledge and capacities of young people in the field of public youth policies, youth networks and communications for development.
By involving them in research and policy-making processes, the young people from this network –already actively involved in organizations or institutions working on youth issues – will be trained for work in youth policies and programmes, and will collaborate with a group of experts from governments, IGOs and NGOs in the region, who will advise and work with them.

With this in mind, the Meeting will bring together young people from UNESCO’s 35 Member States and its 2 Associate Members in the Americas, as well as experts from more than 30 organizations working on youth issues in the region.

As well as working synergistically with the group of experts, the Americas Youth Network will be at the heart of a wider youth network. The focus will be on regional dialogue and inter-cultural exchanges, where youth expression and youth visions are fostered, articulated in terms of a shared outlook for the continent. After all, young people – born in a global context and developing with it – are well adapted to the evolving and changing realities of a world (and not simply a continent) that is being redefined in the short, medium and long-term.

Before the regional meeting, the participants will take part in a five week online discussion, where they will outline the report and road map which will be officialized during the meeting in the Dominican Republic.

The information document is available in Spanish and English - the two official languages of the Meeting: English | Español.
