2008 International Essay Contest for Young People - Winners Announced!
The results of the International Essay Contest 2008, organized by the Goi Peace Foundation and UNESCO, are now available. The theme was "My project to create positive change in my environment: How can I foster sustainable development in my community?”

2008 International Essay Contest for Young People - Winners Announced!The contest is organized annually by the Goi Peace Foundation, in cooperation with UNESCO, and the company "Earthrise", under the patronage of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan. It gives young people from all over the world, up to the age of 25 years, the opportunity to have their voices heard by writing an essay on current issues such as culture of peace, media and communication or sustainable development.

For the 9th edition 4.711 essays were sent in from 137 countries. UNESCO’s Section for Youth, Sport and Physical Education formed part of the jury who selected the winners.

The first prize of the children's category, which concerns children up to the age of 14, was awarded to Martin Kotarski from Croatia (age 13). In the “youth” category, for young people aged between 15 and 25, the first prize was awarded to Valeria Cortez Vaca Diez from Bolivia (age 17). Two 2nd prizes and five 3rd prizes were awarded in each category. In total, 50 honourable mentions were also given to 50 essays.

The laureates will receive a financial award and will benefit from a trip to Japan for the Award Ceremony. They received an Encouragement Award from the Japanese Ministry of Education at a ceremony organized during the Goi Peace Foundation Forum 2008 held at Bunkyo Civic Hall in Tokyo on 9 November 2008.

The theme chosen for the 2008 edition falls within the global initiatives of the United Nations such as the "International Decade for a Culture of Peace and Non-Violence for the Children of the World" for 2001-2010 and the "United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development" for 2005-2014.

The Goi Peace Foundation is an organization committed to building peace. Through cultural and educational programmes, its objectives are to enhance peace and respect for life and to raise awareness among young people on the role they could play in this area. The Foundation benefits from a special consultative status with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations and maintains an official relationship with UNESCO.
