Regional training workshop on sexuality education for national curriculum developers and UN technical teams (23-28 May 2011, Johannesburg, South Africa)

Enhancing capacities for integrating sexuality education in national school and teacher training curricula in East and Southern African (ESA) countries.

UNFPA, UNESCO, UNICEF and HEARD are collaborating to deliver a first of its kind regional sexuality education training which aims to build the capacity of education sector curriculum developers and UN staff from ESA countries to effectively integrate sexuality education into the curriculum, as the first phase of a systematic approach to reinvigorating implementation of quality, evidence-informed comprehensive sexuality education including a strong HIV prevention component in the ESA Region.

The impetus for the training came from, among other activities, a 2010 review of the education sector’s response to HIV and AIDS in the region and a subsequent colloquium on “Reinvigorating Education Sector Responses to HIV and AIDS in ESA”. Several countries prioritized, as a first step, review and enhancement of the sexual and reproductive health components of their Life Skills Education (LSE) curricula. Following the colloquium and other advocacy efforts, a number of countries in ESA started reviewing and opening dialogue and processes to better integrate sexuality education in their curricula. However, despite strong commitment to move forward with curriculum reviews, various cadres of the education sector leadership and UN technical staff expressed their inability to effectively address the curriculum challenge without an in-depth understanding and practical technical training on effective sexuality education.

This proposed training therefore seeks to build capacity of national curriculum developers and UN staff to review, design and implement effective sexuality education curricula.
