Evaluation of higher education in Iran has been taking place within the past 15 years. Results of such research efforts have been presented in the annual conferences on Internal Evaluation in University Systems (IEUS).

The IEUS-2010 conference was hosted on 26 April 2010 by the University of Tehran and UNESCO Chair for Management, Planning and Quality Assurance in Higher Education, established within the Institute for Research and Planning in Higher Education, in which about 200 participants from universities and other higher education institutions attended.

At the opening ceremony, the Chancellor of the University of Tehran (UT) highlighted the role of policies regarding quality enhancement in higher education at national level. He highlighted some initiatives which enhanced quality of higher education. Pointing out the importance of assessing and improving the quality of learning, he also described the process of establishing an innovative network related to improving quality of teaching-learning processes at the UT.

The UNESCO Chair Professor Abbas Bazargan emphasized the need to advocate enhanced quality higher education and the need to empower faculty members to enable such improvement. Ten research papers presenting new findings in quality assurance practices in Iran were discussed during oral presentation session. Furthermore, during a round table discussion, the representative from UNESCO Tehran Cluster Office also underscored the need for linking quality initiatives in general education to the policies of quality assurance at higher education.
