Ghana joined UNESCO on April 11, 1958. The Organization has an office covering several countries based in Accra. In January 2004, Ghana played host to the second Conference of Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Ministers of Education.
Concerning the education of girls, Ghana, in partnership with UNESCO, implemented a programme designed to increase the number of girls receiving schooling.
Ghana also participates in UNESCO's Teacher Training Initiative for sub-Saharan Africa (TTISSA), a 10-year project aimed at restructuring national teacher policies in 46 sub-Saharan countries.
