Letonia ingresó en la UNESCO el 14 de octubre de 1991.

El centro histórico de la capital letona, Riga, fue inscrito en la Lista del Patrimonio Mundial en 1997.

En julio de 2005, Riga fue la sede del Foro Internacional titulado "La transmisión del patrimonio cultural inmaterial: jóvenes, educación y desarrollo".

La región de Vidzeme al Norte es una reserva de biosfera que forma parte del Programa sobre el Hombre y la Biosfera (MAB) de la UNESCO.

Letonia otorga gran importancia a la conservación de su patrimonio inmaterial, su tradición folclórica está representada por las celebraciones de los cantos y danzas bálticos, proclamadas en 2003 Patrimonio Oral e Inmaterial de la Humanidad.
