Montenegro se convirtió en el 192º Estado Miembro de la UNESCO en marzo de 2007.

La ciudad medieval de Kotor y el Parque Nacional de Durmitor, dos sitios de Montenegro, están incluidos en la Lista del Patrimonio Mundial.

En el 2005, se creó la Cátedra UNESCO en Educación para la Ciudadanía Democrática y los Derechos Humanos en la Universidad de Montenegro, en Nikšić.
