Education is key to the development of Africa. Today a little more than half of African adults are literate and some 60 per cent of children go to school. UNESCO works to keep education high on the agenda of governments and development partners working in the region. Click here for UNESCO Africa Website.

UNESCO, together with its International Institute for Capacity-Building in Africa (IICBA), is carrying out a variety of education projects in the region. Below is a selection of links describing UNESCO activities in the area of primary education in Africa.
Assistance to school canteens and to girls’ schooling - Bamako, Mali.
The objective of this project is to contribute to the realisation of basic education for all and to the reduction of disparities between regions, cities and rural areas, and between girls and boys.

Education of nomads in east Africa (IICBA).
With financial support from the African Development Bank, UNESCO and UNICEF jointly implemented a study of education for nomads in six African countries (Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda).

Guidance, counselling and youth development.
This project promotes a more caring school environment in Africa, in particular for girls, and helps African education systems to provide guidance and counselling services in schools.

HIV/AIDS and Education:
Accelerating the Education Sector Response to HIV/AIDS in Africa in the Context of EFA: Sub-regional workshops, Africa: These reports describe the sub-regional workshops.

Moving in the right direction? New approaches to nomadic education in Ghana.
Formal education rarely reaches pastoral communities. Schools usually promote the values and practices of dominant cultures and do not prioritise the needs of marginalized populations.

National seminar for discussion and reflection.
Topics for consideration include the production of adequate learning materials for deprived children in Dakar and of user guides for teachers, and the celebration of International Day for Innocent Children Victims of Aggressions (4 June).

Promotion of education for young girls and women in Africa - Dakar.
This special project aims to provide training and technical support for the planning and implementation of more effective schooling for young girls.

The International Institute for Capacity-Building in Africa (IICBA).
has developed an HIV/AIDS preventive education manual for Ethiopian teachers, and is working on HIV/AIDS videos for children, adults and teacher training colleges in Africa.
