UNGEI was launched in 2000 at the Dakar World Education Forum by the United Nations Secretary-General, Kofi Annan. Thirteen UN entities, led by UNICEF, have agreed to work together on this 10-year initiative to help governments meet their commitments to ensure a quality education for all girls everywhere. UNGEI is a partnership mechanism that draws on the knowledge and experience of a variety of agencies, including those which are not directly involved in girls’ education.
It provides a platform for those interested in education, or in broader gender issues, to speak with the same voice and work in coordination to help achieve MDGs and EFA goals that are UNGEI’s guiding framework and inspiration.
