This review of socio-economic empowerment initiatives for women living with HIV in Asia complements the assessment of the Women and Wealth Project (WWP), supported by the United Nations Development Programme Asia-Pacific Regional Centre and implemented by the Population and Community Development Association of Thailand. The purpose of this review is to compare the approach used in the WWP with those employed in other ten similar initiatives in Cambodia, China, India, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam and make recommendations based upon the findings of the WWP assessment and the review.
As the HIV epidemic matures, survival of children with perinatally acquired HIV infection into adolescence is increasingly being documented in sub-Saharan African countries. In addition, the burden of HIV in the adolescent patient population in the region is also due to sexual transmission, with adolescents and young adults being particularly vulnerable to this mode of infection. HIV care and treatment services in the region need to adapt to adequately meet the specific needs of this expanding disease burden among adolescents. …
HIV infection is much higher among adolescent girls in sub-Saharan Africa than among boys. This is a reflection of how governments, both rich and poor, have ignored obligations ratified in conventions to ensure the social protection of vulnerable children (United Nations, 1989). This report provides findings from the rollout of the People Living with HIV Stigma Index (PLHIV Stigma Index) in nine countries in Asia and the Pacific (Bangladesh, Cambodia, China, Fiji, Myanmar, Pakistan, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Thailand). It provides the first large-scale regional comparison of standardized human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-related stigma indicators. It shows that stigma and discrimination have profound implications for HIV prevention, treatment, care and support. …
This report examines the impacts of HIV on the care choices of children, exploring how HIV affects whether or not children can remain within parental care, and on the alternative care options open to them. It is based on qualitative research in Malawi, India and Ukraine, and on a global literature review. It is in response to alarming global evidence on the rising numbers of children outside of parental care, and growing global recognition that responses to HIV should centre on increased support to families as the best means of providing care and protection for children.
The current report is the first attempt at an in-depth analysis of the socio-cultural factors driving the HIV epidemic in Georgia and the socio-cultural resources that can be used in the response to the epidemic.
