This monograph is designed to promote positive attitudes toward care and support for people living with AIDS. It reviews a range of approaches and discusses how different options can be made more widely available even in resource-poor environments. It is also intended to guide planners and policy-makers on how best to utilise scarce financial and human resources for health in general, and HIV/AIDS care and prevention, in particular. It recognises that most activities are still aimed at reducing HIV transmission as a priority focus. However, as HIV/AIDS becomes the leading preventable cause of disease globally, comprehensive strategies to cope with the ever-increasing burden of disease are urgently needed.
