The propose of the study was to probe in greater depth, and within the more systematic frame of a research methodology, the dynamics of two current initiatives aiming to provide support to vulnerable children in both Lesotho and Swaziland. Each of the four interventions had within their programme designs a main emphasis on enabling school enrolment and sustaining school attendance. This qualitative investigation studies the impact of belonging to a high school Gay/Straight Alliance (GSA or Alliance) on the lives of seven students. Individual and focus group interviews were conducted over a two-year time period. The author used voices of gay, lesbian, bi-sexual and straight students to relate the experiences unique to each participant. In addition, data from media and spoken transcripts, video tapes of news reports, grade records, and the GSA advisor's personal observations were analyzed and organized into a framework of seven categories of impact. …
Best practices for adolescent sex education recommend science-based approaches. However, little is known about the capacity and needs of organizations who implement sex education programs on the local level. The purpose of this research was to describe successes and challenges of community organizations in implementing science-based sex education. Using qualitative methods, we interviewed program directors and educators in 17 state funded adolescent pregnancy prevention/sex education programs as part of a larger mixed methods evaluation. …
Today HIV/AIDS is one of the biggest challenges facing the world. The risk of getting the virus is particularly high for young injecting drug users, who are isolated, marginalized and often lack access to even basic prevention services. This publication focuses on reaching out to young drug users with information, services and structures that are appropriate to their needs and how civil society at large can contribute.
This toolkit was designed to be used by implementors such as experienced programme staff from NGOs, government offices or private industries who want to implement an SRH project for 10-14 year olds enrolled in primary school. The project activities within the toolkit rely on the implementor creating a strong partnership with local schools and community leaders. The toolkit presents several overlapping approaches to increase young adolescents’ sexual and reproductive health knowledge and improve their sexual behaviours.
